Theyyam Experience

Step into the sacred realms of Northern Kerala, where ritual, art, and ecology converge

Ekathra’s Theyyam Experience offers a unique opportunity to witness one of Northern Kerala’s most powerful and sacred traditions. More than just a performance, Theyyam is a deeply spiritual and cultural ritual that breaks barriers of caste, celebrates nature, and connects people across communities.

At the heart of Theyyam is a strong connection to sacred groves known as Kavus—small forest sanctuaries that are believed to be the homes of local deities. These groves not only reflect Kerala’s ancient respect for nature but also help protect local biodiversity. The rituals performed here highlight a deep, time-honoured bond between people and their environment.

Theyyam also challenges social norms. During the ritual, performers—often from marginalized communities—are transformed into living gods. For a brief time, traditional hierarchies are turned upside down, as even the privileged seek blessings from them, showing Theyyam’s power to promote equality and respect.

This experience explores Theyyam from many angles—its spiritual depth, vibrant artistry, physical intensity, and its role in sustaining both culture and nature. Participants engage closely with performers, scholars, conservationists, and local people to gain a real, grounded understanding of this living tradition.

Join us on this immersive journey to discover how Theyyam blends the divine, the human, and the natural into one unforgettable experience.

Thira (Thirayattam) Experience

A powerful ritual where dance, devotion, and tradition merge in a vibrant celebration of heritage

Thira, or Thirayattam, is a captivating ritual performance deeply rooted in the spiritual, social, and religious life of North Kerala. As part of Ekathra’s Cultural Heritage Experiences, this journey invites participants to witness and understand the significance of Thira—an art form that blends dance, drama, and devotion in a powerful display of Kerala’s cultural richness.

Performed in temple courtyards, Thira is closely linked to the Theyyam tradition. Dressed in vibrant costumes with elaborate face painting, performers represent deities and ancestral spirits. The intense rhythm of drums, combined with their trance-like movements, creates a divine and immersive atmosphere.

Thira is not just a spiritual act—it is a social and cultural event that brings communities together. Passed down through generations, mostly by marginalized communities, this sacred tradition continues to preserve Kerala’s intangible heritage.

Participants in this experience not only witness the dramatic performance, but also get to interact with performers, scholars, and tradition bearers, gaining deeper insight into the meanings and stories behind the ritual.

Join us to experience the sacred energy of Thira—where tradition, devotion, and artistry come together in a vibrant celebration of Kerala’s living culture.
